Most of my work revolves around history, legend and landscape. These things have been the main sources of inspiration throughout my life, and Brittany has proved a remarkably fertile place in this context.
I’ve written two walking books, three guidebooks, one history book, a travelogue and two novels. I’ve also supplied commissioned articles for the Independent newspaper, French interest magazines and many websites. My most recent book (May 2011) is The Shape of Mist, a small collection of short stories and poems, subtitled Tales of the Monts d’Arrée. These rework traditional Breton legends in surprising ways, and add a few new stories of my own invention in keeping with the genre. The text is in English and French, Lambeaux de Brume (translated by Yves Marhic). In 2011, I devoted a lot of time to writing short Ebooks on Breton themes – The Megaliths, Rennes, Quimper, the Nantes-Brest Canal, Food and Drink, etc. – which lavishly illustrated products can then be purchased (remarkable value!) and downloaded from the website www.brittanyexpert.com I'm continuing work on my elusive new novel which has themes of pilgrimage and following new paths, with a Cornwall/Brittany setting and an ancient/modern story (seemed to be required these days) created around a Breton saint and holy relics. I may throw in the odd murder to be really on the money. I am currently preparing a new book for 2012 on the vast subject of the legends of Brittany, analysing themes of the rich Breton oral tradition and presenting many stories, some well-known, many not. It certainly provides an insight into the formation of Brittany from the time of the Dark Ages. |
